PS3 price cut only temporary?

Like thousands of other gamers I have been closely following this years E3. I had heard rumors of a PS3 price drop, and was happy to hear it was fact after E3 started. Imagine my surprise when I read yesterday in a 1up article that the PS3 price drop is “only temporary” (WTF!) Sony stated as follows:

“The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.”

Even though they are lowering the price of the 60GB, but after the supplies are gone they will only be selling a new $599 model that will have an 80GB hard drive and will also ship with a copy of MotorStorm. This new model will become available in august. As of April the PS3 has sold 1.1 million units, the Xbox 360 has sold 5 million, and the Wii has sold 1.86 million. Even though the Xbox 360’s lead is mainly due to its early release, the PS3 is still in last place. Even the PS2 has sold more units than the PS3 in the time since its release. I am a loyal user of PS2 and once owned a PS1, but I will never spend $600 on a game console.
