What J.J. Abrams said at Comic Con Part 2

Heres more of what J.J. Abrams said:

“This is gonna be really really quick. I just want to say I want a monster movie! I want a great monster movie! I wanted a monster movie for so long! And I was in Japan over a year ago with my son who is 8 and all he wanted to do was go to toy stores. We went to a store and saw Godzilla’s everywhere and I thought what better. We need our own monster.

We need a monster movie. I love King Kong! King Kong is just adorable and Godzilla is a charming monster I love Godzilla but I wanted something that was just insane and intense. So we started making this movie and are working it now. I watch dailies and I am more excited about the movie itself then the trailer which has gotten an amazing response.

I cant thank you enough for that. I would say it will be nearly 6 months before this movie comes out. Its a long time so in the coming months your going to get the real trailer, the real poster, and the title. But you wont get the title today. Do you think I should call it Monstrous?”

This quote comes from a Movies Online article.

Also I recently read that it could be another classic Japanese monster: Gamera.

What J.J. Abrams said at Comic Con

We now know two more things about “1-18-08”:

1. Its not called “Monstrous” as was recently rumored. Abrams still won’t give up the real title of the movie.

2. Abrams said “We need our own Godzilla.” Does this mean it’s another American Godzilla movie, or does this mean it’s a totally original monster that will be to America what Godzilla is to Japan?

Really we don’t know much more, well just have to wait to hear more.

Untitled J.J. Abrams Project (1-18-08)

Last week I went to see Transformers, and like anyone else who saw Transformers I saw the trailer for the mysterious currently untitled J.J. Abrams project. This trailer is being referred to as “1-18-08” which in the trailer is the date it is set to be released in theaters. Internally it is being referred to as Cloverfield, but this is not the confirmed title of the movie. The IMDB page for the movie has only one one sentence in the plot outline: “Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people.”

According to a VH1 article these are the current rumors

“1. It’s a “Godzilla” reboot: One theory says that, much like “Batman Begins,” this flick will relaunch the stalled monster-movie franchise after the 1998 bomb that starred Matthew Broderick in a Monica Lewinsky beret. The “clover” phrasing might be code for the green color synonymous with Godzilla.

2. It’s a “Lost” movie: Set for release around the same time as the show’s fourth-season kickoff, perhaps Abrams is ready to take his hit show to the next level. Such clue-dropping would certainly be consistent with much of the chicanery the program has used in the past.

3. It’s an H.P. Lovecraft movie: Seventy years after the death of the great American sci-fi/horror writer, perhaps Abrams and company are planning to play off his Cthulhu Mythos, which basically details creatures from other worlds invading ours. Since most of Lovecraft’s work is now public domain, the absence of licensing fees would make sense for a modestly budgeted monster flick, and the trailer would be consistent with his typically firsthand-account manner of storytelling. To further strengthen the theory, if you rearrange the letters in Clover, you get “lovecr.”

4. It’s “Voltron,” “Rampage,” etc.: With “Transformers” breaking records left and right, the studios are obviously eager to green light like-minded projects. As such, geek-boy minds are running wild, speculating that the footage is everything from “Jurassic Park IV” to another “King Kong” movie.

… And then, of course, there’s the simplest theory: That Abrams, Goddard and Reeves have created something wholly original. To make matters even more confusing, consider this: MTV News’ West Coast headquarters is one block away from a street named “Cloverfield”! OK, maybe now we’re just being paranoid.”

I’ve also read it could be another Godzilla monster, such as Rodan. We will find out which rumor is true (or if none of them are true) because J.J. Abrams is set to talk on this film and his “Star Trek” film at this years Comic-Con in San Diego.
